Tips for Advancing in Your Performing Arts Career with Limited Resources

As an actor/singer/performer, you may feel stuck and need to shift your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance. Discover how to make progress in your career by utilizing online resources, forging connections, leveraging social media, embracing self-education, and nurturing a "marathon" mentality.
Ready to explore the glory of an abundance mindset, even with limited $$?
Tip #1 - Harness the Power of Online Learning
When the stage seems distant, the digital realm can be a guiding star. If you find yourself without the means for a voice teacher, for example, fear not!
Dedicate an hour each week to your very own "cosmic voice lesson." Explore platforms like TikTok or YouTube, and follow along with others' vocal lessons, or mimic the techniques of talented performers. Absorb their wisdom, incorporate it into your practice, and watch as your vocal prowess reaches new heights.
For mix/pop vocal tips, I personally recommend you check out Natalie Weiss, Emily Kristen Morris, or Cheryl Porter!
The same goes for film acting - sit and watch a movie while following along in the screenplay. Watch actors online and take note of their choices, eye lines, movement, etc. There is a universe online...explore from the comfort of your home, and do small things each day to get better.
Tip #2 - Create Stellar Connections
Networking is key. Even if you can't attend costly industry events or workshops, take advantage of online communities and social media platforms. Engage with fellow artists, join virtual forums, and participate in discussions centered around your craft. Collaboration and mutual support within this virtual galaxy can spark unexpected opportunities, propelling your career forward.
"You can never rest on your laurels. Never expect that the world owes you anything. You have to go out there and get it and make the most of the opportunities that come your way..." – Kate Winslet
Tip #3 - Celebrate Galactic Persistence
In the journey of a performer, persistence shines brighter than any supernova. Embrace a mindset that thrives on perseverance and resilience. Recognize that setbacks and challenges are part of the cosmic tapestry, but they do not define your trajectory. Continuously hone your skills, seek feedback, and take risks. Remember, the universe rewards those who keep pushing forward, one step at a time.
If you're feeling low, here are some methods that may help:
- Go on a walk and find a grassy area to take your shoes off and walk on the earth. Ground your electric body, and breathe slowly and deeply. Take in the nature around you and just be.
- Try the heart coherence breathing technique (from HeartMath). To learn how, their website has a quick explanation and video: HeartMath. I personally attribute this to the healing of my depression many years ago, more than any herbs, exercise, or any other method. It took over a month, but I slowly felt my heart's warmth return. Giving yourself daily gratitude, love, and compassion for about 5 minutes, 3x/day... it's very healing.
- If you're up for it, reach out to one friend and ask for help. Inquire if they'd be willing to be a shoulder to lean on for a while. Perhaps they can send you daily texts (to remind you that you're supported), go out for a coffee/tea, or watch a movie with you. Being around others can instantly lift your mood, bring you into a new environment, or simply distract your mind for an hour or two.
- End your day with a few minutes of gratitude. Write examples down, listen to a gratitude meditation, or draw/color while you think about all of the things that went well today. You've got this, star.
Tip #4 - Leverage the Power of Social Media
Social media remains a cosmic force in the entertainment industry. Use platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn to showcase your talent, share behind-the-scenes moments, and connect with industry professionals. Engaging with your online audience can attract attention, build a fan base, and open doors to exciting opportunities.
Just be sure to watch out for scams, and check each connection before agreeing to join a project, or meet with someone in person.
Tip #5 - Embrace the Art of Self-Education
While formal training programs offer valuable insights, don't underestimate the power of self-education. Dive into the celestial sea of literature, biographies, and autobiographies of influential performers. Immerse yourself in plays, scripts, and musical scores that resonate with your artistic soul. The knowledge you acquire independently will help shape your unique artistic voice and set you apart from the crowd.
Try these:
- The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron (This book is a 12-week creativity course, so it's a bigger time investment!)
- Madly, Deeply by Alan Rickman
- The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide by Jenna Fischer
Don't have the funds to buy these materials? Here are some options:
- Check out your local library
- Swap books with friends
- Find audiobooks on YouTube, or through your library's app
- Ask local theatres if they have any plays on hand that you can sit and read in their lobby
- Read Shakespeare! In fact, a lot of classical theatre is in the public domain and can be easily found online.
That's a Wrap!
